For his spring 2016 collection, designer Joseph Altuzarra updated traditional Basque costumes in a way that is remarkably sensual. These heels combine the rustic ease of espadrilles—touches of jute, whipstitched details, ribbon-like laces that tie at the ankle—with the elegance of d’Orsay pumps in soft and smooth black kidskin. Developed by Count Alfred d’Orsay (1801-1852) as a snugly fitting improvement on military footwear of the time and later adopted—and elevated—by women, the classic silhouette is distinguished by its arch-revealing cutaway sides.
